What kind of legal assistance is offered by the Law Project?
The Law Project provides free legal assistance for transactional matters to community-based nonprofit organizations and small businesses. The Law Project does not provide litigation services of any kind.
How Do I Access this Assistance?
Refer to the APPLY section of this website. If you determine that the assistance you are seeking fits with the services offered, complete an application. Once the completed application and administrative fee have been received, TLP staff will initiate the process of identifying a volunteer interested in working with you.
How Long Does this Process Take?
Once we receive and review a completed application a volunteer will be recruited. That person’s law firm will determine whether it is an appropriate pro bono matter and generally get back to TLP staff within two weeks. A meeting between the client, the volunteer and TLP staff is then scheduled.
Is the legal assistance provided by the Law Project really free of charge?
The attorney representation is free. TLP charges an administrative fee which is determined by the organization’s budget and the nature of the request. Each application lists the fees. The client is responsible for government filing fees, such as the I.R.S. application for tax exemption fee.
